(Oral Powder)
Characters
A white to light-yellow-colored powder.
Composition
1 g of the drug contains:
Active substances:
Oxytetracycline hydrochloride : 100.0 mg
Colistin sulfate : 1,200,000 IU
Pharmacological Properties
Coli-Ox 200 is a combination drug which contains two antibiotics.
Oxytetracycline is an antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline group.
The mode of action of the drug is inhibiting protein synthesis by binding microorganisms sensitive to the drug with 30S ribosomal subunit thereby preventing the ribosomes from binding with aminoacyl-tRNA. Oxytetracycline is also believed to be bound reversibly with 50S ribosomes and to alter the cytoplasmic membrane permeability of sensitive microorganisms.
Oxytetracycline has a broad spectrum of action on gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms: Streptococcus spp., Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., Brucella spp., Haemophilus spp., E. coli, Pasteurella spp., Klebsiella spp., Erysipelothrix spp., Fusobacterium spp., Salmonella spp., as well as on the protozoon (Protozoa spp.), mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma spp.), rickettsiae Rickettsia spp.) and Chlamydia (Chlamydia spp.).
Colistin sulfate is an antibiotic belonging to the group of polymyxins which are synthesized by an aerobic spore-forming bacillus Bacillus polymyxa. It acts bactericidally on gram-negative bacteria (such as E. coli, Salmonella spp., Pseudomonas spp.) through binding with phospholipids of the cytoplasmic membrane increasing its permeability for both intracellular and extracellular components this resulting in the destruction of cellular barriers.
Uses
The treatment of pigs, poultry (broilers and replacements, turkeys), lambs, calves, and kids (of up to 8 weeks of age) in diseases of the digestive tract and respiratory apparatus caused by microorganisms sensitive to oxytetracycline and colistin.
Dosage and Administration
Orally at a dose of:
Lambs, calves, and kids (of up to 8 weeks of age): 0.5 g of the drug per 10 kg bw twice daily for 5 to 7 days;
Pigs, poultry (broilers and replacements, turkeys): 100 g of the drug per 100 to 200 L of water or 100 g of the drug per 50 to 100 kg of feed daily for 5 to 7 days.
To prepare the solution, pour the required quantity of the drug into a small vessel and, while stirring continuously, pour warm water. Add immediately the concentrate (the drug + drinking water 1:40) so prepared to the requisite quantity of drinking water in accordance with water rates for individual age categories of poultry. Prepare a fresh solution of the drug every day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to oxytetracycline and colistin.
Do not administer to animals with their liver or kidneys affected.
Do not combine with antibiotics that have a bactericide action such as penicillin, cephalosporin, aminoglycoside.
Do not combine with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID).
Do not administer to laying hens producing eggs for human consumption.
Do not administer to ruminants with the well-developed proventriculus.
Precautions
In mixing the drug with feed, use individual protection equipment (a respirator, gloves).
Test the drug preliminarily in a small number of animals (7 to 8 heads). If no complication during 2 to 3 days, use the drag for the entire livestock population.
Withdrawal Period
Animals (pigs, lambs, calves, and kids may) and poultry may only be slaughtered for meat 10 and 7 days, respectively after the last use of the drug. Until this date, meat is disposed or fed to non-food-producing animals (according to vet’s conclusions).
